Built in 1534 by the renegade Safir Ben Abdallah, Djamaâ Es-Safir is the oldest mosque of the Ottoman era. It took nine months to build. It is located within the Casbah of Algiers, the medina district that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The mosque was restored in 1791 under Baba Hassan and by the dey Hussein in 1827. Its octagonal minaret is emblematic of Ottoman-style religious buildings.
