LARGE POST
Built in 1913, this post office is renowned for its exterior façade, large domes, minarets and marble staircase.
Algiers' Grand Post Office is one of the must-sees on your visit to the city. It is also a tourist landmark in the city center. After months of restoration, the building has been restored to its former splendor and pristine white. Built in 1913 to plans drawn up by architects Voinot and Tondoire, the Grande Poste was intended to mark the move of the colonial city center to boulevard Laferrière (now Mohamed Khemisti), established on the site of the former French-era city wall. The building is a symbol of the neo-Moorish architectural trend initiated in the early 20th century by Governor Jonnart as part of the reforms undertaken in favor of Algerians and with a view to bringing the European and native populations closer together. The exterior façade is typical of the Moorish style: large domes, minarets, marble staircase, wooden doors. The building's crown is composed of green earthenware bands, panels engraved with the names of Algeria's main cities, arches, a tiled cornice and a row of merlons. The highly refined interior ornamentation is inspired by the Hispano-Moorish buildings of Andalusia: a dome decorated with finely chiselled stucco and a crown of stalactites, marble columns topped by sculpted capitals... The walls are adorned with religious inscriptions in Arabic. The old mailboxes near the entrance are particularly beautiful.
