DAR AHMED PACHA
This palace, once home to the dey Arab Ahmed, now houses the Théâtre national algérien.
Dar Ahmed Bey is located in the lower Casbah, in the Souk el-Djemâa district, along rue Hadj Omar. The palace was built in the 16th century as the residence of the dey Arab Ahmed, who was responsible for the government of Algiers. His first name was Ahmed, but he was named Arab Ahmed to distinguish him from the other Ahmeds. Appointed to Algiers, he remained here for just over two years, spending his time fortifying the city in fear of attack. Today, the palace houses the management of the Théâtre national algérien and has recently been renovated.
