ADMIRALTY LIGHTHOUSE
This admiralty lighthouse adorns Bordj el-Fanar, an impregnable city built between 1541 and 1544 by Hassan Pacha.
In 1511, Pedro Navarro had a circular bastion equipped with cannons built on one of the islets off Algiers, the Peñon. Kher-Eddine wrested the Peñon from the Spaniards in 1529, joined the islets to the port and built a jetty to protect Algiers and its harbor. The pulse of the city was measured in the dock, where the privateers who made Algiers an impregnable city prepared their expeditions. Bordj El Fanar, later embellished by the lighthouse, was built between 1541 and 1544 by Hassan Pacha, who also installed the first batteries.
