MUSEUM OF ANTIQUITIES AND ISLAMIC ARTS
Interesting museum in Algiers housing an important collection of classical antiquities: sculptures, mosaics, bronzes, pottery.
Inaugurated by Félix Faure in 1897, the Musée des Antiquités was Algiers' first municipal museum. Today, it's one of the most interesting museums in the city, and well worth a visit to discover more about Islamic art. It houses a major collection of classical antiquities, including sculptures, mosaics, bronzes and pottery unearthed during excavations at Algeria's various archaeological sites, as well as a Muslim art section featuring a collection of objects from the various Arab and Berber dynasties that ruled Algeria and the Maghreb. Some pieces also come from the Near East. In the room devoted to pagan cults, a sarcophagus from Azzefoun (Kabylia) dating from the 3rd century AD depicts the Greek legend of Bellerophon. In the coin room, cedar wood tablets dating from 493, representing deeds of sale, bear witness to the passage of the Vandals. Mythological mosaics from Tipasa, Constantine, El Asnam and Bordj Bou Arreridj are particularly well preserved. The other part of the museum, devoted to Islamic arts, features coins from all the Arab-Berber dynasties, swords, guns, jewelry, carpets, furniture, earthenware and more. Highlights include the minbar from the Grand Mosque of Algiers, dated 1097, and the carved wooden door from the Ketchaoua mosque.
