The Abu Farès mosque is better known as Djamaâ Lihoud, "Mosque of the Jews", because it is in fact the former Great Synagogue of Algiers, converted into a mosque in 1962.
Built in 1865 on the former Place du Grand-Rabbin-Bloch, in the heart of what was once the Jewish quarter, it remained a place of worship for the Jewish community of Algiers for almost a century. Later, it acquired a minaret and became the Abu Farès Mosque in 1962.
