CERVANTÈS CAVE
This cave in Algiers was the refuge of writer Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra when he was fleeing privateers.
In 1575, the writer and soldier Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (1547-1616) was captured by privateers commanded by the raïs Arnaout Mami. He was held captive in Algiers for five years. In 1577, he managed to escape and found refuge in this cave, where he hid for seven months, awaiting the arrival of an armed Spanish frigate that was supposed to free him. Found by privateers, he was taken to the penal colony. It wasn't until 1580 that the sum of 500 gold ecus, requested by Aranout Mami, was collected by Brother Juan Gil and other Christians to free the writer.
