The Great Mosque, known as the "Hundred Column Mosque", lies at the heart of the old town. It was built in the early 16th century - 1574 to be precise - by Andalusians on the site of a Roman temple, in an Andalusian-inspired Maghrebian style. The hundred or so columns that support it, and from which it takes its name, undoubtedly originated from the western thermal baths. In colonial times, the French turned the mosque into a civil and military hospital.
