AMPHITHETRY
Cherchell's distinctive amphitheatre was once the setting for fights between wild beasts and gladiators..
Built at the time of Juba II on the site of the necropolis which extends towards the Cape Tizerine, it is unique by its shape and its size which place it above the Colosseum of Rome. It could welcome up to 15 000 spectators around a rectangular arena where fights of wild animals, gladiators or even reenactments of battles were given. The arena has been filled in several times and has not been able to reveal its secrets, especially those of the underground galleries where the shows were organized. According to legend, Saint Marcienne was martyred there.
