NEW MUSEUM AND MOSAIC PARK
A museum in Cherchell comprising a room dedicated to a collection of everyday objects and another devoted to Roman art.
The New Museum was built in 1979 on the Route d'Alger, some 500 metres east of the old museum, directly on the ruins of an ancient Roman villa. Its purpose was to support the old museum, which had become too small to house new archaeological artefacts. It's well worth the detour to complete your visit to Cherchell and your knowledge of the city's ancient period, but it's best to come accompanied by a guide, as explanations are not the most abundant on site. The first room is devoted to a collection of everyday objects (coins, jewelry, pottery) and funerary furnishings (steles, sarcophagi) from the three periods - Punic, Roman and Muslim. The second room, dedicated to Roman art, features a series of sculptures: busts and heads of philosophers, Roman deities of Greek origin, as well as fragments of reliefs and frescoes that adorned villa walls. The very fine mosaics discovered in the 1960s have been brought together in a single place, the Mosaic Park, for the sake of conservation. Coming from the reception rooms of the homes of wealthy Caesareans, they feature motifs inspired by everyday life or mythology (Theseus and the Minotaur, Venus's toilet, etc.). Their state of preservation is remarkable. The park also features outdoor sculptures, fountains and columns.
