Maherero Days in Okahandja, also commonly known as Heroes Day, takes place around August 26, the date of the infamous Battle of the Waterberg. This day is a tribute to the Herero people and their leaders, notably Samuel Maharero, Hosea Kutako, Clemens Kapuuo, as well as all the soldiers and fighters who fought for Namibia during the confrontations against the Germans at the beginning of the 20th century, some of whom lost their lives. It is in their honor that the people gather for this commemoration in traditional costume.
