Majestic Hindu temple at Mengwi, the second largest in Bali, with numerous pagodas, a superb pool, etc.
This temple is thesecond largest Balinese temple after Besakih. Built in 1740, it is the work of Cokorda Munggu, the most famous king of Mwengi, who moved the seat of the kingdom from Kapal to Mengwi. The great monarch had another palace built, Puri Gedé Mengwi, a short distance from Pura Taman Ayun. The latter remained the largest temple in the kingdom of Mengwi until its fall in 1891. The temple is surrounded by a moat and is therefore located on an island along a river. By the way, Pura Taman Ayun means "temple garden in the water".
This majestic temple is made up of two courtyards: the first courtyard is composed of a beautiful basin where a fountain is enthroned, and the second of many pagodas that are integrated into the landscape. In the latter, the highest pagoda with its 11 roofs is dedicated to Sanghyang Widi, or bija the supreme god of the Balinese pantheon, and the smallest worships the sacred mountain Gunung Agung with its 3 roofs. According to the belief, among the rows of altars where the gods come to stay during the ceremonies(palinggih), you will see the paibon, facing east, which represents the royal altar. It is one of the most beautiful Balinese temples. In popular belief, it protects Bali from evil spirits which gives it a high importance in the eyes of Balinese. The temple was restored in 1937. It is an important part of the island's cultural history and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2012 due to its importance and majestic architecture.
