THE FORT OF BRESCOW
Fort built on the only island on the Languedoc coast, which served as a state prison from 1680 to 1852.
Built on the only island on the Languedoc coast, the Fort was erected in 1586 by order of the Vicomte de Joyeuse. After being used as a pirate hideout, the king demanded that it be demolished, but this was prevented by Cardinal Richelieu, who saw the site as an opportunity to build a military port. His death put an end to the work. The fort subsequently served as a state prison from 1680 to 1852, before being decommissioned and assigned to the Ponts et Chaussées department in 1889. A historic monument, it is part of the town's identity, and has been undergoing restoration since 2018.
