HOLY ASSUMPTION OF THE VIRGIN MARY
Russian church on Mission Avenue, the oldest in Alaska, with a chapel in honor of the famous priest Saint Nicholas
Located on Mission Avenue, this 1896 Russian church is one of the oldest in Alaska and one of the best preserved of the twenty-three Orthodox temples still standing and listed in the region. With its white wood-paneled facade and distinctive octagonal belfry, it's a pretty sight. It was originally built in 1846 by a Russian priest, Father Nikolai, whose name was given to the lovely St. Nicholas Chapel, built in 1906 in his honor.
