A walk through Granville’s fortified upper town, where you’ll discover stories, a panorama...

While a visit to the Haute-Ville is well worth the effort, you can’t pass through Granville without a visit, and for a good reason: it’s a magical place. On foot, the ascent offers a breathtaking view of the port, and it’s only at the top that you’ll see the Chausey archipelago and the immensity of the English Channel, while at your feet you’ll see the delightful 1930s casino. The Upper Town, built entirely of granite stone, is rich in history, and these fortifications bear witness to its past: at right angles to Rue Saint-Jean and Rue Notre-Dame, the alleys enabled the defenders to move quickly from one side of the town to the other. But first, you have to pass under the drawbridge and the Grande Porte, built around 1630. A stroll from the Rue du Marché au Pain to the Rue du Marché au Cuir will give you an idea of the economic vitality of this small fortified town. You’ll also want to stop off at 45 rue Saint-Jean to admire the beautiful late 17th-century granite façade of the Hôtel Ganne-Destouches, where Barbey d’Aurevilly immortalised the famous chouan arrested here in his novel Le Chevalier Destouches. History, panorama, literature: it’s more than just a stroll that awaits you here, and as you climb the Haute-Ville, you’ll understand why it’s nicknamed the Monaco of the north. Not because of the skyscrapers, of course, but because of the old town, perched on a promontory that’s hard to reach and can be seen from miles away. It’s hard not to fall under its spell!
