A beautiful neo-gothic church with exhibitions.
This mid-19th-century neo-Gothic church (one of the first of its kind) is more than a religious building. The YOT Foundation wanted to give it a new role in a world where the spiritual is tending to disappear. Artists come here for residencies, exhibitions are organized... YOT - an experiment on space, man and religion in the church of St. Mary Magdalene.
The church of the Madeleine is an oasis of rest for all those who stop there-
a meeting place next to the nearby park-
a stop on the road for those who are searching-
a place of prayer for the faithful-
a place where the great moments of life are celebrated-
a place where art and spirituality go hand in hand-
a place where violence is banished
. It was Pierre Buyck, an architect from Bruges, who drew up the plans for the church of Saint Magdalene around 1848, following the indications of the English architects Thomas Harper King and August Welby Northmore Pugin, both of whom were well known in Anglophile circles in Bruges.
The result was a remarkable building, erected between 1850 and 1853 by the entrepreneur Antoine Verbeke, south of the former convent of the Friars Minor. When the interior was completed in 1910, it was a unique neo-gothic work, because it was uniform in its architecture, furniture and decoration
