CHURCH OF SANTIAGO (SINT-JAKOBSKERK)
St. James Church with a statue of St. James with pilgrims on their way to Compostela, and a pulpit
The church was built around 1240. Note the pilgrim figure of St. James with a shell on the doorpost. In addition to its connection with the Compostela pilgrimage, the church was a popular place of worship for the Burgundian court in the 15th century, due to its proximity to the Prinsenhof. Foreign dukes and merchants staying in the nearby Loges district frequented the church and made donations, as did guilds and patricians (as shown by the many commemorative plaques). The church's wealth of works of art led to it being dubbed the "treasure room".
Its success led to it being enlarged to its current proportions. As a hall church, the side chapel of Saint-Antoine contains the altarpiece of Saint Lucy, painted in 1480, showing the pious young girl condemned to be locked up in a whorehouse. No effort on the part of her torturers seems to overcome her resistance. Also on view is the mausoleum of Ferry De Gros (1544), former treasurer of the Order of the Golden Fleece, decorated with theAdoration of the Magi above the high altar. Thirteen scenes depicting the life of Jesus and Saint James the Greater. A Madonna and Child by Luca della Robbia, a statue of St. James with pilgrims on their way to Compostela. A tribune, a large pulpit and a carved wooden vat date from the Baroque period.
