CHURCH OF SAINT GILLES
The former small Gothic church of Saint-Gilles, transformed into a church-hall, with four interesting paintings.
The former small Gothic church of Saint-Gilles, built in 1274, was originally located outside the city walls. As the city grew, it was transformed into a hall-church, dominated by its 70 m-high tower, completed in the 18thcentury . It contains four interesting paintings (1774) by Jan Garemijn, depicting episodes in the history of the former archconfraternity of the Trinity Brothers, dedicated to the redemption of slaves. Several of Bruges' greatest artists, including Memling and Pourbus, are buried here.
