HOLY CROSS DOOR (KRUISPOORT)
Door on the slope that follows the trace of the old walls, where the Clauwaerts' troop enters during the massacre of the Bruges Matins
Built in 1297 and quite transformed since then, it still stands on the embankment that follows the trace of the old walls. It was through this gate that the Clauwaerts entered the city on the night of May 17-18, 1302, to slit the throats of the French during the Bruges Matins massacre. The other city gates: at the end of Ezelstraat stands Ezelpoort; at the end of Gentpoortstraat, Gentpoort and Smedenstraat obviously leads to Smedenpoort.
