MAISONS-DIEU
Typical Bruges houses, old residences built by the guilds or wealthy citizens in Bruges.
These typical Bruges houses (the oldest dating from the 14th century) are former residences built by guilds or wealthy citizens for members of the profession and their widows, the elderly or the needy. The houses are often built around a central garden, with a chapel, well or water pump. Since the French Revolution, most of these houses have been state property. Most are still inhabited by the elderly. There are many around Katelijnestraat and near St. John's Hospital.
