This medieval gate in Bruges is renowned for its robust appearance, reflecting its defensive function.
One of the 4 gates of medieval Bruges, its robust appearance bears witness to its defensive function. Outside, 2 Romanesque cylindrical towers with loopholes and heavy doors frame a small passageway. Inside: 2 pointed bell towers, a flat facade adorned with a sculpture of Saint Adrian, the town's protector against the plague. A compulsory passage for foreigners arriving in town, the gate was also used for importing and exporting goods.
