PAUL DELVAUX MUSEUM
Paul Delvaux Museum, exhibiting the largest collection of works of the master, paintings, watercolors, drawings, engravings
Paul Delvaux is a painter who was first a post-impressionist, expressionist and then a Belgian surrealist. He was born on 23 September 1897 in Antheit (Belgium) and died on 20 July 1994 in Furnes. Housed in the heart of a former fishermen's house, the museum that pays tribute to him was completely renovated in 2019. Unexpectedly, it spreads over more than 1,000 m2, displaying the largest collection of works by the Belgian surrealist master in the world. The permanent collection (paintings, watercolours, drawings, sketchbooks, engravings, etc.) invites visitors to discover the unique world of the internationally renowned artist, a journey into a world of poetry and dreams. Along the way, we become familiar with Delvaux's dreamlike language: naked women walking through the heart of neo-classical architecture crossed by trains, symbols of the modernity of the time, his fascination for the skeletons embodying men (which terrorised him as a child during his studies). The artist's personal objects, true sources of inspiration, are also on display. Each season, the museum offers a temporary exhibition that highlights a particular theme and contributes to revealing the richness of a timeless work. Recommended: a guided tour of about an hour to rekindle the passion that is always aroused by this must-see painter. Gourmet? Enjoy a refreshing break at the café restaurant adjoining the museum and offering one of the most beautiful terraces on the coast in an idyllic green setting.
