A true angeleno institution since its opening in 1908 by the French Philippe Mathieu, this great dinner has been located since the 1950 s at the gates of Chinatown. Its specialty is the French dipped sandwich, a sandwich lightly wet in the juice of meat whose bread is garned (beef, lamb, turkey, choice). Philippe Mathieu, in 1918, accidentally dropped the bread of the sandwich he was preparing in the oven sauce; the client, a policeman, decided to eat it anyway. Amazed by the taste of this failed sandwich, he came back the next day with a group of friends to ask for a sandwich soaked in the meat juice… the legend was born. Nothing good gastronomic in the old fast food, but the salads of macaroni or potatoes, the soup soups or broken peas, Caesar salads, the inevitable coffee juice and the famous sandwiches are true diner classic. The American way of life optimistic and good child of the 1950 s. The apple pie (apple pie), another classic of this address, is a simple and comforting regal.

The French dip beef sandwich was good ! Over priced but it’s great for once a year or something (:

I have waited YEARS to come to this iconic place and to taste their famous sandwich. I should of waited longer and kept the myth in my head. The beef was dry, and I got the super wet sandwich, the bun fell apart, yes partly do to the dip, but that IS why we came, to taste the beef and au jus....so disappointed.

It had been way too long getting back to Philippe's. It's exactly the same as it was 10 years ago! Awesome! Best dipped lamb sandwich anywhere and that goes for the potatoe salad as well. Inside it still has that old world charm! And as always the place was busy with means they are doing it right! If your in LA near Dodger stadium and you're looking for a place to grab a bite? Then you need to hit up Philippe's! They have been doing it right since 1908. Check it out! You won't be disappointed.
