The façade of Hotel Casa del Mar, extending along the beach of Santa Monica, attracts all the views. The cuisine takes advantage of California, French and Asian influences to prepare excellent seafood dishes. The windows, high from the floor to the ceiling, overlook the sea and offer a magnificent view to the sunset.

The ignorance front desk displayed for guests’ safety is terrifying. I called a second time requesting to speak to the manager, and was blatantly redirected to the front desk (by a different manager) for the rollaway bed again then was told it comes with a fire hazard because I have a “two double rooms”, then I requested for further explanation then the front desk can’t explain it and redirected me back to the manager and I was told that having a rollaway bed in a double room is a fire hazard, then why was I offered this solution at all???? The final manager offered to send a rollaway bed for the night and lower the bed tomorrow, I took the offer.
I really had much better expectations for a 5 start hotel, not some condescending remarks on how ridiculous my requests are. These type of attitudes can only land lawsuits in the end. The service is so bad that I’d recommend anyone to stay away from this “5 star” hotel.
Edit: follow up:
We got a call to the room by manager Brian apologizing for the event from the previous night, and offering guardrails be installed on the bed instead of having the bed lowered. Not sure why this is such an inconvenience in the first place by the first front desk agent when it could all get solved by a guardrail. The concerns and solutions are not important here but the attitude the front desk had.
As Max had replied in this review that my problems are solved, I do hope future guests wouldn’t have to deal with such encounters. I revised my rating accordingly.
While the hotel is in a good location and provides most amenities expected by a a luxury hotel, there were a few things I did not anticipate: As someone who is aware of what is going on in the world in regards to environmental issues (particularly in California with immense water shortages, droughts etc) I was really surprised at how unsustainable everything is handled from an operational perspective in this particular hotel. They make 0 efforts to reduce their footprint as a huge hotel complex.
- Every drinking glass in the room comes wrapped in plastic, every singe day
- Every room is provided fresh ice in a plastic bag every single, evening even though no one requested this and most nights it just goes wasted. The best thing to do here would be to offer this upon request. Incredibly wasteful.
- the showers are old and therefore the water streams are super powerful, there is no way to optimize it for use. So much water just being wasted.
- They say if you put the paper card to ask for NO new sheets and towels on you bed, they wont change them for you to reduce their impact. Every time we put the card down, they still changed everything.
- Their room cleaning cadence is to change bed sheets and towels every single day. Why and how is that necessary?
People are paying a lot more attention to the sustainable practices of hotels and are choosing places that are leading with efforts here. Unfortunately Casa del Mar was the opposite of what we hoped to see, and is very backwards in their practices.
