EL CORTEZ
Old Las Vegas hotel-casino, in the heart of the Fremont East District, with a barber shop, pool and nightclub
El Cortez is a relatively small hotel-casino (364 rooms) located in the heart of the Fremont East District, one block from Las Vegas Boulevard. It's one of the oldest casino-hotels in Las Vegas, having been in continuous operation since its inception in 1941. Its retro Mexican hacienda façade has never been altered.
When JK Houssels, JC Grayson and Marion Hicks (architect) chose to build this casino on the corner of6th and Fremont Streets, it seemed to many an unprofitable location, too isolated from Downtown and Hwy 93 (the former Las Vegas Boulevard). Yet it was a great success. So much so, in fact, that gangster Bugsy Siegel and his cronies Meyer Lansky, Gus Greenbaum and Moe Sedway were quick to take an interest in the property, acquiring it in 1945 and turning the site into a gathering place for organized crime. In 1963, the complex was purchased by Jackie Gaughan, a wealthy Nebraska investor whose name appears on the list of investors in other city establishments (Flamingo, Golden Nugget...) and created the Pavilion Rooms. In 1980, a further 15 floors were added to the hotel. After a complete renovation in 2006, the 64 Cabana Suites were finally created in 2009, giving the hotel its current accommodation capacity. Despite the passing years, the business has remained family-owned and Jackie Gaughan's son, Michael, holds the reins. Entrance to the El Cortez is reserved for those over 21.
