A tour to explore the heritage and natural riches of the Cotentin and Bessin Marshes Regional Nature Park.
On June 6, 1944, 20,000 American paratroopers jumped over Carentan, Sainte-Mère-Église and Utah Beach. Their main mission: to protect the troops landing on the beach and seize Carentan as quickly as possible, in order to unite the front between Utah and Omaha beaches. It would take them 6 days of deadly fighting to achieve this goal. The Circuit Historique 1944 is a 40 km trail of remembrance. 13 key D-Day sites are integrated into a GPS-guided itinerary, including the dead man's crossroads at Saint-Côme-du-Mont, the cursed drop zone at Angoville-au-Plain, the hellish corner of the barquette, and Hill 30 at Méautis. You follow the route in your own vehicle, reliving history at your own pace in the heart of the Carentan marshes. This original and historic tour is also an opportunity to discover the rich heritage and natural resources of the Cotentin and Bessin marshes regional nature park. Allow an afternoon for the tour, which takes around 3 hours to complete. The visit can also be made via the Kit M mobile cultural and tourist application, which also offers a "15 years in 1944" tour between Saint-Lô and Hambye. This is a stress-free way to discover the D-Day landings at your own pace, with the sensation of reliving step by step the stages of those decisive days in the liberation of Europe. For further information, contact the Carentan tourist office or the D-Day parachute center.
