CHURCH OF SAINT-CÔME-DU-MONT
This church, dedicated to St. Come, is the seat of the only Cluniac priory in the Cotentin.
In 950, a church, dedicated to Saint Côme, was founded at the mouth of the Douve. It is the seat of the only Cluniac priory in the Cotentin: it is the patronage of Cluny that explains the vast dimensions of the building. The church, built in small units, is composed of a nave of three bays, side aisles, a transept and a choir ending with a semi-circular apse. Many elements date from the 12th century: the porch and the window of the western gable, the large round arches, the splayed windows and all the capitals of the nave. A walled doorway has a carved tympanum on the south arm of the transept. On the outside, there are flat buttresses on the western façade and a cornice with modillions and billets on the choir walls. A square tower, the upper part of which was restored in the 15th century, dominates the whole church. Since 1946, the church and the small cemetery that surrounds it have been classified as historical monuments. A visit here will give you a good overview of the religious architecture of the Cotentin. If you are looking for the church, note that it is not in the town centre of Carentan, but in Saint-Côme-du-Mont, a few kilometres to the north when you take the old national road 13. The commune is now part of the town of Carentan-les-Marais, the result of the merger of many communes in the area.
