WATERFALL CIRCUITS
Explore the waterfalls of Mortain, true natural treasures of Normandy Switzerland.
Within walking distance of the town centre, two bucolic waterfalls rumble down the Mortain valley. And when you arrive here, you’re in for a change of scenery: the bocage gives way, in some places, to low mountain landscapes - we speak of Norman Switzerland, and not without reason! The small waterfall is fed by the Cançon, which rushes down the rocks to form a narrow, white-water canyon, majestically spilling its waters in a lacy curtain that forms a fascinating landscape. The Grande Cascade is the largest waterfall in the West. Its 25-metre drop impresses with its flow and its remarkable rocky setting. The path to the Petite Cascade is landscaped and leads to the Chapelle Saint-Vital, hidden in its green setting, and the Rocher Brûlé, which offers a bird’s-eye view of the town. Then on to the Grande Cascade, which cascades down its Armorican sandstone bar. This is where the Cance, a tributary of the Sélune, flows into the river. The rhododendrons in bloom in late May/early June add to its charm. The staircase along the way leads to a wooden footbridge spanning the river, allowing you to fully enjoy this perpetual spectacle, changing with the seasons. The tourist office offers guided tours of these sites, revealing the popular local legends associated with them. Find out more beforehand, as the site can be very busy, especially in fine weather.
