BLANCLANDE ABBEY
Legend wants the abbey to be founded in the early th century with Mathilde's granted vows and his husband Richard of the Hague, Seneschal de Coutances. Captured by pirates while crossing the Channel to win England, he hopes during his captivity to base an abbey if he manages to escape. Richard succeeds his escape and returned to Normandy. Both spouses then base the abbey in thanks. The monks occupy the building for 635 years until the fate of the site becomes dysfunctional. In the French revolution, it was purchased as a national good, and then in the th century hosted a community of nuns. But this place is also known for its shadow, because it is haunted, if you think of ancient testimonies of dry shots heard every night in the germain dwelling… this mythical place, loaded with stories and legends, has inspired writers such as Barbey d'Aurevilly and Jean de La Varende. He was also assigned to unexpected activities, being even a discotheque about a quarter of a century ago. The history of Blanchelande Abbey is a little reminiscent of that of the Vow abbey in Cherbourg, which was built around the same time. A wish, finally, for the curious and lovers of old stones: maybe one day can visit the place…
