MONTGOMERY HOTEL
The Hôtel Montgomery in Pontorson is where Gabriel de Montgomery lived.
This magnificent 16th- and 17th-century mansion was home to the Counts of Montgomery, including Gabriel I de Montgomery (1530-1574). He is famous for having mortally wounded the French king Henri II during a tournament organized in 1559 to mark the wedding of Elizabeth of France to Philip II of Spain. The event took place on the rue Saint-Antoine in Paris. Having failed to achieve the victory he had hoped for against Montgomery, the king insisted on breaking new lances with his opponent, despite his fatigue. They ran at each other so hard that, with his broken spear, Montgomery struck the king in the right eye. Taken to the Palais des Tournelles, on the site of today's Place des Vosges, the monarch died nine days later, having granted Montgomery a pardon. Montgomery left France for England, where he joined the Reformation. Taken prisoner during the Wars of Religion, he was executed on the orders of Catherine de Médicis, widow of Henri II... Today, the Montgomery mansion is a 3-star Best Western hotel.
