MONTGOMERY HOTEL
The Hôtel Montgomery in Pontorson is where Gabriel de Montgomery lived.
In this magnificent 16th and 17th-century hotel, the counts of Montgomery were inhabited and, in particular, Gabriel I of Montgomery (1530-1574). He was known for fatally injuring the King of France Henri II during a tournament held in 1559 on the occasion of the wedding of Elisabeth de France with Philippe II of Spain. It was in the rue Saint-Antoine in Paris that the event took place. Having won the expected victory against Montgomery, the king insisted on breaking new spears with his opponent despite his fatigue. They ran against each other so badly that, from his broken lance, Montgomery gave a blow to the king’s right eye. Immediately taken to the palace of the Tournelles, located on the site of the present Place des Vosges, the monarch died nine days later after giving his pardon to Montgomery. He left France for England, where he joined the reform camp. Made a prisoner during the Wars of Religion, he was executed on the order of Catherine de Médicis, the widow of Henri II… Today, the Montgomery Residence is a 3-star Best Western hotel.
