EREMO DEL DESERTO
Retreat in the woods giving a testimony of monastic architecture of the 12th century.
From Varazze, a 4.5 km hiking trail leads through the hamlet of Casanova to the hermitage. This woodland retreat, at the gateway to the Beigua nature park, is an interesting example of17th-century monastic architecture. You can admire a beautiful church and the isolation cells of the monks who still live there today. Inside, a Miraculous Crucifix in ivory, made in the 17th century by an Indian craftsman who converted to Christianity. An altarpiece by Domenico Fiasella, the Sacra Pastora, decorates the high altar.
