CHIESA DI SANT'ANDREA
Church with a polygonal drum bell tower in Levanto.
A happy expression of Ligurian Gothic, the church, uncertainly dated to before the 13th century, was enlarged in the 15th century. Its white Carrara marble and green serpentine striped facade is enlivened by an 18th-century rose window and a lunette depicting the Coronation of the Virgin. Inside, a 14th-century black Crucifix has been the object of much popular devotion since it was found washed up on the beach. The adjoining bell tower, with its polygonal drum, was already rebuilt or transformed between 1614 and 1621, and took on its current appearance in 1805.
