CHURCH OF ST. NICHOLAS
This church is one of the jewels of Baroque art in Haute-Savoie.
This is one of the jewels of Baroque art in Haute-Savoie. This art form, which originated in Italy in the 16th century, crossed the Alps with the Frahans (masons) and spread to Haute-Savoie. The parish of Haut Val Montjoie (now Saint-Nicolas de Véroce) lies on the old road linking Piedmont to Geneva and Valais. Built in 1726, the sober exterior of the Saint-Nicolas church contrasts with the cheerful colors of the various elements, and the vaults painted Saint-Nicolas blue in 1856. A museum of sacred art can be seen in the adjoining presbytery.
