ZANZIBAR KILOSAS CONSERVATION
A modest little local zoo located north of Nungwi that has some interesting animals to discover in their enclosures.
This modest little local zoo is located north of Nungwi, very close to the Essque Zalu hotel. It has some interesting animals to discover in their enclosures, although the question of locking up wild animals for commercial exploitation and selfie-taking obviously arises. All the more so since they're touched here, so they're pawed all day by tourists and guides. The label "conservation" is also questionable, as there is no clear objective to protect and reproduce the species in question or those under threat... It's all about tourism and commercialism. Nevertheless, the largest of these animals, the vervet monkeys and dik-diks (small antelopes), are easily tamed, even in the villages by the locals. Vervet monkeys, for example, are not at all aggressive when you enter their enclosure and are happy to pose for photos - even with children, it's safe - and dik-diks follow you everywhere, no doubt proof of their relative well-being and domestication. You can see an adorable bushbaby (a local lemur that can be heard and spotted in the trees at dusk), tortoises, chameleons that can be placed on your arm or head, a royal python that can be placed on your shoulders, and a crocodile... which can't be placed anywhere, as it stays in its enclosure!
