EXCURSION À SAADANI NATIONAL PARK
Agency organizing day safaris in Saadani National Park in Tanzania mainland.
Zanzibar Nature Trail, run by the very friendly Shauri Kondo, organizes full-day safaris in Saadani National Park on the Tanzanian mainland, from Nungwi just across the road, some 25 nautical miles (55 km) away, with a transfer by powerful boat that makes the round trip in the same day. A rather expensive excursion, but much cheaper than a full safari and quicker for those short on time. It includes two game drives (morning and afternoon) in the park, entrance fees and lunch.
On the coast between Pangani and Bagamoyo, this park of almost 1,000 km2 is home to lions, leopards, elephants, hippotragues, oryx, giraffes, buffalo and other large mammals. It's the only reserve in Africa where you can still see elephants bathing in the sea! The vegetation is fairly dense bush. You can take a boat trip on the Wami River (only with the airplane tour), which is home to hippos, crocodiles and birds. To the south-west of the reserve lies the thick Zaraninge equatorial forest, with a canopy above and swamps below... The village of Saadani, the only one of its kind tolerated in a national park by the Tanzanian authorities, also played its part for centuries as a place of exchange and embarkation for slaves and goods, between the interior of the continent and the islands, notably Zanzibar.
