Situated in the heart of the Baie des Veys, the Domaine is part of the vast marshland complex of the Cotentin isthmus, covering some 820 hectares. The land status of the reserve is made up of a part belonging to the maritime public domain and a part on land, owned by the Conservatoire du Littoral since 1997. The natural environment, made up of intertidal mudflats, salt meadows, dunes, ponds and wet meadows, is home to a large number of heritage species. More than 1,700 species have been recorded, including over 200 species of birds, molluscs, mammals, amphibians and reptiles. Among the many insects, there are almost 400 beetles, around a hundred butterflies and some twenty species of dragonfly. The site is also renowned for hosting 35,000 waterfowl every winter: teal, wigeon, pintail, greylag goose, brant, sandpiper, common grackle, oystercatcher, etc., and birds of prey: peregrine falcon, marsh harrier, etc. Nesting waterbirds, such as lapwing, shelduck, great crested grebe and paludicolous passerines. The National Nature Reserve is also home to France’s second-largest colony of calf seals, a species of Community interest. It is the region’s leading site for birdwatching, with over 30,000 visitors a year. Guided tours are organized to help visitors discover the site. Observatories, accessible to all, provide easy access for birdwatching.
