Museum dedicated to the D-Day landings, near Utah Beach. A great place to visit in Sainte-Mère-Église.
The Airborne Museum in Sainte-Mère-Église is one of the best-known museums dedicated to the D-Day landings, and is located on the town's church square. With its 4 buildings and modern, interactive and spectacular scenography, the museum guides you in the footsteps of the American paratroopers of D-Day. Here, you can board a real glider, the only one of its kind in France, or a C-47 aircraft like the paratroopers of the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions at the time, to relive the fighting in the marshes... The museum's film, "Les chemins de la Liberté", shown in the large cinema, emotionally explains the fates of the men who came to Utah Beach to save Europe. The museum also offers a tour based around a C-47 aircraft, a true veteran of the Normandy landings, immersing you in the world of American paratroopers. From the briefing room, with its larger-than-life hologram, a large-screen film explains Operation Overlord, and realistic statues tell the story of the men who made D-Day happen. In May 2024, to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day, the museum inaugurated its 5th building entirely dedicated to gliders, a permanent exhibition on the Occupation and the Resistance, and the redevelopment of its grounds. The theme of the temporary exhibition to be unveiled in April 2025 will be French paratroopers in the Indochina War (1944-1954).
