DOOR OF THE PRISON
Door of a former prison, monument to the memory of the department’s resistance and victims of Nazi repression
Built in 1824, the prison of Saint-Lô was destroyed by bombing in the night from June 6 to 7, 1944. The Germans had locked one hundred and fifty people, including many resistance members of the region who perished that night by bombs... Only the door of the building remains. The council decided to keep it in memory of the victims. It has become a monument to the memory of the resistance of the department and of the victims of Nazi repression. An urn containing the ashes of the deportees was placed nearby.
