THE ABBEY OF SAVIGNY
A wooden abbey in Savigny, where the Romanesque doorway is still standing following the visit of Saint-Louis in 1256.
Savigny in the south of France boasts the remains of the largest abbey church in western France. 1112 is the commonly accepted date for the founding of the Savinian order by Vital de Mortain. The first wooden abbey was consecrated in 1124. Savigny became the sole head of the order. Saint-Louis visited the abbey in 1256, and the Romanesque door, still standing, was dedicated to him. The abbey fell into disrepair after the French Revolution, but the local authorities gradually began to consolidate the existing walls.
