THE SEMAPHORUS
Semaphore belonging to the Conservatoire du littoral and hosting scientists in charge of studies related to the foreshore.
The Semaphore was built in 1867 on the highest point of the archipelago called Gros-Mont. From there, the lookouts could see Mont-Saint-Michel at the end of the bay, Coutances Cathedral and the ships sailing from Saint-Malo to Jersey. Today, the semaphore belongs to the Conservatoire du littoral and since 2007 has been home to scientists in charge of studies related to the foreshore. Its silhouette, perched on a small hill, can be seen from far away: many people use it as a landmark, especially when the archipelago’s physiognomy changes with the tides.
