A fortress to visit on Îles Chausey, a site steeped in history that was built by Napoleon III in 1866.
It was in 1866 that Napoleon III built this fortress in the tradition of Vauban. Decommissioned as early as 1906, it experienced various fortunes, between total abandonment and renewed interest, as it held several hundred Germans and Austrians during the First World War, and a Nazi garrison during the Second. This granite building, surrounded by deep ditches, is one of the few public spaces on the island (along with the lighthouse). The rest is a huge private property where entry is tolerated for passing tourists.
