THE FORMER ROYAL BENEDICTINE ABBEY
An architectural abbey that was once the town’s hospital, featuring a Baroque portal, abbess’s residence and horizontal bands
It is an architectural ensemble of the first rank, and which was for a long time the hospital of the city. The Benedictine nuns of Cherbourg found refuge there during the plague of 1626. The church, built in 1635, was consecrated in 1648. You will notice on the façade the baroque portal, flanked by pilasters and bosses, but also the dwelling of the abbess ordered with harped chains and horizontal bands. Guided tours are organised.
