Château on Place Foch in Alençon, classified as a historic monument, the entrance pavilion and towers remain
The entrance pavilion, two high crenellated towers, a crowned tower and sections of the dwelling walls remain of this former 11th-century fortified castle built by the Lords of Bellême and subsequently extended by Henry I Beauclerc. The rest was dismantled, in part by King Henri IV. The pavilion housed a prison from 1824 to 2010. And during the Occupation, the Gestapo tortured resistance fighters here. The landscaping of the Simone Veil park in the château's courtyard affords a magnificent view of the fortress from the foot of the towers or from the garden.
