OUNCE PYRAMID

These two pyramids are smaller in size and made from materials that are less durable over time.
The two pyramids of Ounas and Teti date from the5th and 6th dynasties. Externally very dilapidated, these pyramids are nonetheless interesting for their walls covered with hieroglyphs for the use of the deceased, confronted with the world beyond. These are the very first texts ever inscribed in pyramids. The burial chamber of the Ounas pyramid, with its star-decorated ceilings, still contains a massive black basalt sarcophagus. These two pyramids are smaller than the others, as their construction corresponds to the beginning of the period of decadence of the pyramidal form for funerary complexes: the previous pyramids had already fallen victim to looting attacks. The two pyramids of Ounas and Teti are smaller in size and made of less durable materials. The decline of this pyramidal form led to totally different burial complexes, such as those in Luxor's Valley of the Kings, where no pyramids were built, but rather tombs dug into the rock, no doubt to protect the pharaohs' tombs from looting.
Near the pyramids of Ounas and Teti are the three particularly impressive Saite tombs (600 BC), linked by a narrow tunnel. The middle tomb has preserved a superb sarcophagus in perfect condition. A spiral staircase leads down to a depth of 25m. A small stone building marks the entrance.
