Complex dedicated to the god Serapis, housing the sacred bull of the god PTah, mummified and placed in one of the enormous sarcophagi.
Discovered in 1851 by the French archaeologist Auguste Mariette who followed the Greek historian Strabon's words mentioning an alley leading to the tombs of Apis. Mariette found the site of this complex dedicated to the god Serapis. Here, at the time of Ancient Egypt, the sacred bull of the god PTah, tutelary deity of Memphis, had been worshipped from afar in his enclosure Apis. At his death, the deified animal - always black with a white triangle on the forehead - was mummified, then placed in one of these enormous sarcophagi (between 60 and 70 tons) still in place.
