The first dam was built by Mohammed Ali to develop the irrigation of this part of the delta and agricultural yields. It was started in 1843 and opened in 1847. It's the implementation of an idea of Bonaparte that wanted to raise a dike at the place called "Cow's Belly" since ancient times, where the Nile separates into two branches. His son Said amused himself to raise a Scottish style defensive citadel a few years later. In 1867, a dozen pillars were damaged and it was in 1885 that the London Convention decided to restore the book. The dam built on the Branche branch is 522 m and consists of 71 arches; the dam built on the Rosette branch is 452 m and consists of 61 arches.
