Carnival in Greece is called Apokries: in Greek, the term literally means "far from meat", which refers to a period of celebration before the privations of Lent. During this period, meat and cheese gradually disappear from meals. Carnival begins everywhere in Greece three weeks before Lent, which lasts 40 days before Orthodox Easter. In Corfu, on the last Thursday of Carnival, women go out on the balconies and speak the dialect and have fun. On the last Sunday of Carnival, a big parade takes place.
