SPILIA
Commercial district with remarkable forts in Corfu Chora.
This neighborhood used to be home to the island's market. It's still a very commercial area, with tourist stores and tavernas. Very picturesque, however, is the old archaic harbor gate in Solomou Street. In Venetian times, Corfu's two forts were linked by large protective ramparts. The walls have been demolished to allow tourists a view, but the "Porta di Spilia" has been preserved: it is one of the possible entrances to the district, which encompasses the old port and the new fortress.
