PONTIKONISI ISLAND
An uninhabited island with a remarkable Byzantine chapel in Corfu Chora.
Boats leave from the port of Panagia Vlachernon (Vlachernes monastery) or Kanoni to "Mouse Island" (because, from a distance, it looks like the small mammal). According to legend, this island was Ulysses' boat transformed into a rock by Poseidon during a storm before his return to Ithaca. Uninhabited, the point of interest is the Byzantine chapel of Pantokrator, located on the highest point of the island, which dates from the 11th or 12th century and contains the commemorative plaques of Empress Sissi (Elizabeth of Austria) and her son, Archduke Rudolph.
