BATTISTERO DEL DUOMO
A superb baptistery, decorated with remarkable frescoes, a marvel to discover in Padua.
Although monumental, the cathedral of Padua in Latin cross is visited rather quickly. On the other hand, the baptistery that adjoins it deserves to be visited more. Built in the 12th century, it is entirely decorated with frescoes dating from 1375 to 1378, works signed by Giusto de Menabuoi, a disciple of Giotto. Observe in particular the fresco that covers the interior of the large dome. It is a scene depicting Christ surrounded by angels, a major piece around which one of the most complete series of 14th-century paintings in Italy is built. Among the works depicting the Old and New Testaments are the destiny of the Virgin Mary and the journey of Jesus of Nazareth from his entry into Jerusalem to his crucifixion. The visitor will also discover pictorial representations of some thirty venerated Padovian saints. At the same time, in the apse of the baptistery, some forty illustrations describe scenes taken from the Apocalypse and the Pentecost story. The evangelists St. Mark, St. Luke, St. John and St. Matthew with their respective symbols are also honored. The work of Giusto de Menabuoi is quite remarkable, both in terms of the colors and the expressions lent to the characters. The discovery of the site would not be complete without the observation of the baptismal font, dated 1260. Finally, it is difficult not to linger over the superb polyptych that decorates the high altar.
